Aamir Sheikh Print E-mail

Aamir Sheikh is managing director and head of research of MSCIBarra. Prior to Morgan Stanley's acquisition of Barra in June 2004, Aamir was president of Barra and was at various times responsible for product development, sales and client service, and content development and delivery. Aamir was instrumental in the development and leadership of Barra's enterprise risk management efforts. Under Aamir's tutelage, Barra launched the first firm-wide risk management solution for the investment management community. In addition, Aamir has provided significant leadership to Barra's research practice since he joined the company in June 1994. His research initiatives include Barra's equity and derivatives risk models. Prior to joining Barra, Aamir taught finance at Indiana University and at Washington University in St. Louis. His work on options has been widely published in academic finance publications. Aamir has a Ph.D. in finance from the University of California, Berkeley. He received his A.B. summa cum laude from Columbia University in New York City, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

 
Akram Chowdry Print E-mail
After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, Dr.Chowdry became a professor at San Jose State University. He left academia to start an electronic manufacturing company, Prime Circuit Technology in 1983. In 1988, Prime Circuit acquired Mylex Corporation. Mylex in turn, was acquired by IBM in 1998. Dr, Chowdry is currently a General Partner at the High Tech Venture Fund. For each of the last three years, Dr. Chowdry has gone to countries in Asia and Africa to teach Entrepreneurship and Venture Financing. So far he has taught at LUMS in Pakistan, Tisbi in Tatarstan, and Kimep in Kazakstan.

Ammar Hanafi Print E-mail

Ammar H. Hanafi joined Alloy Ventures as a General Partner in 2005 from Cisco Systems, Inc. Ammar received a B.S. in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University (1988) and an MBA from Stanford University (1995). His last role at Cisco was Vice President of New Business Ventures where he led new product efforts in the enterprise datacenter market. From 2000 to 2002, he was Vice President of Corporate Business Development and in that capacity, he was responsible for Cisco’s acquisitions, acquisition integration, investment, and joint venture activity on a global basis. He joined Cisco in 1997 as a member of the Corporate Business Development Group. During Ammar’s tenure, Cisco’s Business Development Group completed over 50 acquisitions, leading Cisco into a number of major new businesses, including optical networking and integrated voice and data infrastructure and applications. In addition, the Business Development Group made over $750 million in venture capital investments during the same timeframe. Prior to Cisco, Ammar held positions at PanAmSat Corporation, a global satellite services provider, and the investment banking firms of Morgan Stanley and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Ammar is a director of 3Leaf Networks.

Since joining Sevin Rosen Funds in early 2000, Amra Tareen has focused on telecommunications and networking, with a particular interest in networking technology and researching investment opportunities in cable and broadband. Her previous experience includes management positions at leading communications companies Lucent Technologies and Ascend Communications, where she played a key role in growing Ascend's DSL business. She currently sits on the boards of Clovis, Lambda Optical Systems, and Lemur. Amra Tareen holds a BA in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Mr. Jamal co-founded ePlanet in mid-1999 along with the leading Silicon-Valley venture capital firm, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (www.dfj.com), to focus on global venture capital opportunities. ePlanet closed a US$ 650 million venture capital fund in 2000, making it one of the largest global technology funds. In the U.S., Europe, and Asia, ePlanet's focus is on seed to late stage investments. Under Mr. Jamal, ePlanet has built an office presence in Silicon Valley, London, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Mr. Jamal has led ePlanet's investments in numerous companies and sits on several boards, including IXI Mobile, IntraPace, Baidu, and Zonare, among others. Previously, Mr. Jamal has worked as a Managing Director for Peregrine Investments, the Hong Kong based Asia-Pacific investment bank, and as Head of Fixed Income and Derivatives Trading for the Chase Manhattan Bank in London. Mr. Jamal graduated with a B.Sc. (Honors) in Economics & Finance from the London School of Economics, and is a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales having qualified with Arthur Andersen Co., London.

Ashar Aziz, Founder and CEO, FireEye, holds over 20 patents in the areas of networking, network security, and datacenter virtualization. Prior to founding FireEye, Ashar founded Terraspring, a company focused on datacenter automation and virtualization. Terraspring was successfully acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2002, where Ashar then served as CTO of the company's N1 program. Before Terraspring, Ashar spent twelve years at Sun as a distinguished engineer focused on networking and network security. Ashar holds an S.B in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS) from MIT and an M.S in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, where he was a recipient of the UC Regents Fellowship.

General Partner, Global Access Capital. Mr. Abdullah has over 18 years of multi-disciplinary experience in the high-tech industry including the telecom, enterprise hardware/ software and eCommerce sectors. More recently Mr. Abdullah served as the CEO and co-founder of Appareon, a supply chain software company for retail goods. Prior to that, as a member of the board of directors and the executive staff, he helped launch CommerceOne into a market leader with a successful public offering in July 2000. Mr. Abdullah joined CommerceOne through its merger (Jan. 2000) with VEO Systems, a company he co-founded and lead as its CEO. Veo is credited with fundamental developments in XML and business-business exchange infrastructure. Mr. Abdullah also served as the Executive Director of the CommerceNet Consortium and established it as the leading global institution for the promotion of eCommerce. Mr. Abdullah co-founded TRUSTe, Internet’s largest privacy management service and XETI, Inc. a developer of Internet security solutions (merged into Critical Path in Dec. ’99). Mr. Abdullah has held various marketing and sales management positions at Taligent Inc., IBM and ROLM systems. Mr. Abdullah holds an M.S. in Engineering Management from Stanford University (’87) and BS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan (’84).
 
Aurangzeb Khan Print E-mail
Aurangzeb Khan is Corporate Vice President for Market Development at Cadence Design Systems, Inc. Earlier, he was CVP/GM for Cadence Design Foundry (now part of engineering services), and focused on the IC design business, including IP development and integration. Aurangzeb joined Cadence in 2002 when Cadence acquired Simplex Solutions, where he served as EVP/GM of Simplex's SoC Design Foundry. He co-founded Altius Solutions and served as its' President and CEO, merging with Simplex Solutions and contributing to a successful IPO in May 2001. Before founding Altius, Aurangzeb was VP for Silicon Engineering at Cirrus Logic and Director of Engineering for systems technology development at Tandem Computers (now part of HP). He also developed high-speed SRAMs at Fairchild Semiconductor. Aurangzeb holds two M.S. degrees from Stanford University, in Engineering Management and Electrical Engineering, as well as a double-major B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Nuclear Engineering from U.C. Berkeley. He has a B.Sc. in Physics and Pure and Applied Mathematics from Government College, University of The Punjab (with the Academic Roll of Honor).

Prior to his involvement with Crosby, Mr. Haque was an Associate Director at Peregrine Investment Holdings – a pan-Asian investment bank – responsible for developing Peregrine's corporate finance and private equity businesses in the Middle East, and identifying and evaluating Middle East to Asia investment opportunities. Dilawar is President & Chief Executive Officer of Yonja Media Group, a leading investor-backed, emerging market internet media company, where he is responsible for the company’s strategic vision and execution of its global business. Prior to joining Yonja Media, Dilawar was with Yahoo! where he was head of strategy and business operations for the Platform & Infrastructure Division. In this role, Dilawar led business planning for Yahoo!'s investments in next-generation platforms; managed business operations to support platform adoption across Yahoo!’s network; and drove business development with the developer and partner community.

Earlier, Dilawar spent several years in the software industry in a variety of leadership roles. At SAP, Dilawar was responsible for positioning and launching SAP’s Customer Relationship Management solution suite. At Siebel Systems, Dilawar took various products to market for Siebel’s Communications, Media and Energy business. Most notably, Dilawar launched Siebel's enterprise integration platform, and grew the product line to a multi-million dollar business globally. Dilawar started his career as a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting and Ernst & Young.

Dilawar is active in civic and advocacy efforts. Dilawar served as a member of the National Finance Committee for Obama for America in 2008. He was appointed National Co-Chair of the South Asian American Leadership Council by Gov. Howard Dean, Chairman Democratic National Committee. Dilawar is a Charter Member of OPEN Silicon Valley, and immediate past President of the organization.

Dilawar holds an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Economics and Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin.
 
Faruq Ahmad Print E-mail
Faruq Ahmad is founding partner of Palo Alto Capital Advisors, a silicon-valley based firm which provides advisory services to companies and venture capital firms. He has over the years been founder of a venture-backed software company, as well as a venture capitalist, and also an institutional investor in venture funds. Prior to Palo Alto Capital, Mr. Ahmad was Vice President at C.M. Capital (the Cha Group), a silicon-valley based investment firm with strong China links and a broad venture capital investment program that has been in place for over 30 years. His investment portfolios at the Cha Group have included both company investments as well as fund investments. Mr. Ahmad previously founded PenWare Inc, raised venture capital, and was part of the executive team that took the company public as Mobinetix Inc.  He has earlier held management, marketing and product development positions at Intel, Sprint, and AT&T. Mr. Ahmad has a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.S. degree in Computer Systems from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. degree from Stanford University.

Fawad is currently a Vice President in SAP’s Global Ecosystem and Partner group where he is responsible for all alliance and business development activities with many of SAP's major strategic partners. Prior to his current role he led SAP's M&A strategy team in the Office of the CEO. Prior to joining SAP, he was a Principal at Advent International, a global private equity and venture capital firm. Faysal Sohail joined CMEA Ventures in 2002 as a Managing Director. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Applied Wave Research, Catalytic, Inovys Corporation, Pyxis Technology, Symwave, and Telsima; and Faysal previously served on the board of Alien Technology. Mr. Sohail brings with him more than a decade of senior executive experience in engineering, marketing and business development. He was CEO of Cadabra Design Automation and managed its acquisition by Numerical Technologies (NMTC) where he served as Sr. Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations. Prior to Numerical Technologies, Faysal was Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Synopsys Inc. (SNPS). In 1990, he co-founded Silicon Architects, which was acquired by Synopsys in 1995. Earlier in his career, Faysal spent several years in IC design engineering and marketing positions with Actel Corporation (ACTL) and LSI Logic Corporation (LSI). Mr. Sohail holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), where he also served on the College of Engineering Advisory Board (CEAB), and is Chairman of the Board of the San Jose Education Foundation.

As an advisor to leading technology companies worldwide, he has led a wide variety of financing transactions and has executed numerous mergers & acquisitions. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 1999, Kamal was a Vice President in the investment banking group at Merrill Lynch. He began his banking career in New York at Credit Suisse First Boston. Mahmood Panjwani is the Chairman & CEO of Infinisim, an under the radar EDA startup. Mahmood was co-founder, President and CEO of iManage Inc. (NASD: IMAN) that merged with Interwoven Inc. (NASD: IWOV) in November 2003. During his tenure at iManage, he led the company from its inception in 1995 to its IPO in 1999 and finally its merger with Interwoven. In the pre IPO phase, Mahmood took on the challenge of displacing a formidable competitor, a publicly held company, by focusing on building superior products and attaining unsurpassed customer satisfaction. This led to iManage becoming a de-facto standard in its vertical of choice within 2 years. In the post IPO phase, Mahmood was responsible for building a world-class profitable company with technology that was a leader in its category, a worldwide organization of over 250 people, and a revenue run rate of $55M. He successfully led the company through its toughest period during the technology downturn of early 2000s. He accomplished this by practicing sound financial discipline, maintaining the motivation of a talented team and building a trusting relationship with the Wall Street investors and analysts. Post iManage’s merger, Mahmood stayed on as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Interwoven, to ensure a successful transition. Before iManage, Mahmood was the founder and CEO of Q-Image Corporation, a privately held software consulting company for 7 years where he built a prestigious customer base of companies such as Verizon Wireless, Intel, IBM, Cisco, and Apple Computers. His prior experiences include working in Software Engineering with companies such as Northern Telecom and AT&T Bell Labs. Mahmood holds a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of Illinois. From 1989 to 1994 he was a management consultant, first with Deloitte & Touche LLC in San Francisco and then independently. Naeem is the founding partner of Concordia Ventures, an organization dedicated to educate and help entrepreneurs with all aspects of starting and running a company. Naeem has been with six startups and has extensive experience in mentoring and coaching CEOs. Naeem is currently on the faculty of Haas Business School at the University of California Berkeley where he teaches Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the MBA program. His last assignment was the president and CEO of Pyxis Technology Inc., a company specializing in advanced chip design software for nanometer technology. Naeem has been president and CEO of two other high tech startups (Silicon Design Systems and Veridicom, a Bell Labs spin-off that invented the silicon fingerprint sensors today found on most laptops). Naeem has held senior marketing and engineering positions at several companies including Quickturn Design Systems that had an IPO in 1993 and grew to $125M in revenues. Naeem holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Brown University (magna cum laude), Rhode Island, and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota. Naeem has lectured or co-taught at UCLA, Brown University and at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan where he serves as an advisor to Entrepreneurship & Small & Medium Enterprise Center (ESMEC).
 
Nazim Kareemi Print E-mail
Mr. Kareemi co-founded Canesta in 1999 and was its CEO from inception to 2004, and Chairman of the Board until 2006. He has many years of experience in the high technology industry in engineering and management positions, and has been a successful entrepreneur, building and growing emerging technology companies with unique cultures. He has a SB in EE from MIT and an MSEE and Engineer's degrees from Stanford University. Along with two co-founders, Mr. Kareemi assembled an outstanding team at Canesta and raised several rounds of VC funding. Canesta has developed breakthrough electronic perception technology, acquired a substantial number of patents to protect its intellectual property, and built innovative products used in automotive and security markets. Prior to Canesta, he founded PenWare in 1992 and raised VC funding. He attracted and retained some of the best people in the industry to develop award-winning software. PenWare established itself as a leader in spreadsheets for mobile devices; its OEM customers included Sony, Motorola and Sharp. PenWare also acquired another company to successfully enter retail point of sale terminal market and became public in 1996. PenWare changed its name to Atpos and was later acquired by Symbol Technologies, Inc. Before founding PenWare, he held engineering positions or consulted for well-respected companies such as Zilog, Xerox, and Intel.

Omar brings nearly two decades of experienced leadership in building, running and securing critical internet infrastructure as a technology visionary and seasoned entrepreneur. Most recently, Omar was Vice President of Operations & Infrastructure for Grand Central Communications where he built and ran the network systems for the XML integrator. He previously held positions as CIO/VP Operations for Napster, CTO/Founder of Logictier, a managed service provider with customers including Sony and the 2002 Winter Olympics. As Webmaster for Netscape, Omar oversaw 100% quarterly growth and launched dozens of new channels, services and international datacenters. He was also the Director of Media Technology for @Home Network and the Director of Digital Laboratories for Discovery Channel Online.

Mr. Pirzada was a co-founder and a member of the Board of Directors of Cyras. He was the Chief Strategy Officer of the company at the time of its multi-billion dollar acquisition by Ciena in March 2001. After the acquisition, he served as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for the Metro Switching Division. Prior to co-founding Cyras, Mr. Pirzada served as Director of Technical Marketing at Fiberlane Communications (Cerent). Previously, Mr. Pirzada served as Director of Carrier Marketing for Xylan Corporation. He also held various marketing management positions with Cisco Systems. Mr. Pirzada is also a Technology/Limited Partner at Artiman Ventures, Azure Capital, El Dorado Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Menlo Ventures, Raza Ventures, Venture Lending and Leasing (WTI), Viventures and Worldview Technology. Mr. Pirzada holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and a B.A. in Mathematics from Skidmore College. He also attended Dartmouth College (at the Thayer School of Engineering) as an exchange student and has been a member of IEEE since 1986.

Raghib Hussain is a Founder of Cavium Networks (NASDAQ:CAVM). He currently serves as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Software Engineering. Prior to Cavium Networks, Raghib has held senior technical roles in several startups and large organizations including Cisco Systems. Raghib was a founding team member of VPNet (acquired by Avaya), where he was a key contributor in the design of the first commercial IPSec based VPN (Virtual Private Network) gateway. Raheel ("Raz") Zia is a Vice-President in the Goldman Sachs Principal Investment Area, the private equity arm of the firm. Based in San Francisco and Menlo Park, Raz focuses on growth equity and expansion stage investment opportunities in the technology & services sector. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Raz was a member of the investment team at Bessemer Venture Partners, based in MA. He was previously co-founder of KNUMI, an enterprise software company, and he spent several years in the Investment Banking team at Citigroup in London. Raz graduated from the Harvard Business School with an MBA. in 2000. He also holds an MSc in Advanced Computer Science from London University and obtained a B.Eng Electronic Engineering from Manchester University. Wordwalla was acquired in 2001 by Morisawa Corporation, a public company in Japan. He is also co-founder of Chowk, a niche portal focusing on South Asia. Umair started his career as part of the Itanium microprocessor group at Intel Corporation. Umair founded OPEN (Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs) Silicon Valley, an organization that promotes and fosters Entrepreneurship. He has spoken on entrepreneurship at some of the country's top business schools, including MIT, Harvard, and UC Berkeley. He has been profiled in publications such as USA Today, New York Times, and The Entrepreneur. Umair received a BS in Mathematics (1992) and an MS in Computer Engineering (1995), both from MIT, where in 1991 he was elected by the Department of Mathematics as an institutional nominee to the Mathematical Association of America.

Zain Jeewanjee is currently active in his position as Founder/CEO of Go One Global Corporation and Founder of the Zain Jeewanjee Insurance Agency, which he founded in 1986 and now features operational licenses in 47 states with collective revenues of over $29 million. His was the first company to offer complete end-to-end transactions for insurance packages to customers online, and he has continued to build on that with the same level of forethought and originality. Mr. Jeewanjee is a founder and member of several boards and organizations, such as PESA (Pakistan Engineers and Scientist Association), the Friends of LUMS Foundation (Lahore University of Management Sciences, USA), and the Pakistan Association. Along with Syed Babar Ali (of LUMS), Mr. Jeewanjee was instrumental in the formation of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) chapters in both Karachi and Lahore, and he remains affiliated with those chapters as well as TiE Silicon Valley. In his newest charitable endeavor, the Doctors4Help Foundation, Mr. Jeewanjee has single-handedly conceived, funded, and executed the doctors4help site, which facilitates sending US physicians to Pakistan via organizations such as HDF, Shifa Hospital, Australian Aid International, APPNA, the Imran Khan Foundation, and others. Mr. Jeewanjee is a Charter Member of TiE, TiE Global, and OPEN.
